How Is Lumbar Disc Herniation Diagnosed?

Answer: The basis of correct diagnosis includes:

  • Detailed history (work, sports, trauma, medications, smoking, comorbidities)
  • Neurological examination (muscle strength, reflexes, sensation)
  • Imaging and tests when necessary

MRI is often an important tool; however, MRI alone is not a diagnosis—findings are interpreted together with clinical evaluation. When necessary, standing/dynamic X-rays, blood tests, and in selected cases EMG may be evaluated.
