Cervical Disc Herniation in Children
Question: Does cervical disc herniation occur in children?
Answer: It is very rare. In the literature, the rate in children and adolescents is reported to be below approximately 1% and is mostly trauma-related.
Question: Why are diagnosis and treatment more difficult in children?
Answer:
- Spinal development is not complete
- Radiological evaluation is more difficult
- Long-term spinal health must be considered
Approach in children:
- Investigation of underlying congenital or infectious causes
- Conservative treatments (rest, physical therapy)
- If surgery is required, centers with pediatric neurosurgery experience
Prevention:
- Avoid heavy school bags
- Carry loads symmetrically
