What Is a Brace? Why Is a Brace Used?
A lumbar brace may sometimes be a short-term, simple support that wraps the waist like a belt; in other cases, it may be a lumbosacral or thoracolumbar orthosis that rests on the rib cage and pelvis to restrict movement and may contain rigid—sometimes even steel—supports.
Question: Why is a brace/neck collar prescribed?
Answer: The goal is to provide short-term stabilization in some situations, help reduce pain, and limit movement during the healing period.
Question: Is there a downside to long-term use?
Answer: Yes. Prolonged use can lead to unwanted effects such as muscle weakness, balance/adaptation problems, and restricted mobility. Therefore, the duration and daily use plan should be arranged according to physician recommendation.
