How Is Pain Measured?

Question: Can pain be measured with a device?

Answer: Pain caan not be measured directly; therefore, clinical pain scales are used (e.g., 0–10 numeric scale, quality-of-life and function questionnaires). The goal is not exaggeration or minimization, but obtaining comparable data for follow-up.

When filling out a pain assessment form:

  1. Location (neck/back/low back; radiation to arm/leg)
  2. Severity (0–10)
  3. Duration and triggers (sitting, lifting, coughing)
  4. Associated findings (numbness, weakness, urinary problems)
