Question: Does cervical disc herniation occur in children?

Answer: It is very rare. In the literature, the rate in children and adolescents is reported to be below approximately 1% and is mostly trauma-related.

Question: Why are diagnosis and treatment more difficult in children?

Answer:

  • Spinal development is not complete
  • Radiological evaluation is more difficult
  • Long-term spinal health must be considered

Approach in children:

  1. Investigation of underlying congenital or infectious causes
  2. Conservative treatments (rest, physical therapy)
  3. If surgery is required, centers with pediatric neurosurgery experience

Prevention:

  • Avoid heavy school bags
  • Carry loads symmetrically
