What Is Hydrocephalus?
Question: What is hydrocephalus?
Answer: It is a condition characterized by enlargement of the brain’s internal cavities and pressure effects due to impaired circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Epidemiological studies show that the frequency of hydrocephalus varies by age group and definition, and that it represents a significant health burden especially in the pediatric population.
If hydrocephalus is suspected in an infant:
- Do not miss regular head circumference
- Report findings such as rapid increase, vomiting, excessive sleepiness, or marked bulging of the fontanelle to a physician.
- If requested, arrange imaging studies (ultrasound / CT / MRI) without delay.
