What Is Myelopathy?

Question: Why is myelopathy important?

Answer: Myelopathy refers to a clinical condition suggesting spinal cord injury or compression. If progressive, it can leave permanent effects on walking, hand skills, and bladder–bowel control.

Practical patient checklist for suspected myelopathy:

  1. Has your walking speed decreased in recent months?
  2. Has buttoning clothes or turning a key become more difficult?
  3. Has your balance worsened when going downstairs?
  4. Is there new urinary urgency or incontinence?

If yes, prompt neurological examination and imaging are required.
