What Is Myelopathy?
Question: Why is myelopathy important?
Answer: Myelopathy refers to a clinical condition suggesting spinal cord injury or compression. If progressive, it can leave permanent effects on walking, hand skills, and bladder–bowel control.
Practical patient checklist for suspected myelopathy:
- Has your walking speed decreased in recent months?
- Has buttoning clothes or turning a key become more difficult?
- Has your balance worsened when going downstairs?
- Is there new urinary urgency or incontinence?
If yes, prompt neurological examination and imaging are required.
